Secondary Schools
A problem in secondary schools is to engage those not inspired by traditional PE offerings, which the PE and Sport Strategy for Young People identifies as
-
girls
- young people with disabilities
- those who are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds
- those who come from poorer families
- and those who are overweight or obese.
The strategy advises the introduction of alternative sports and activities that will get these groups active and act as a bridge to more traditional sports and fitness activities.
Fitnessgamings' dance mat packages meet all the criteria to engage these groups and those who do enjoy more mainstream activities.
- The Just for Schools package was supplied to five Tamworth secondary schools to target these groups, particularly girls.
- Golden Hillock School in Birmingham, with a large proportion of pupils of diverse ethnic origins, have also purchased a Just for Schools package.
- The Trent Valley Academy, part of the initiative to regenerate the economy of Gainsborough, purchased a Blufit 8 mat system and a number of Nintendo Wiis for their students use alongside the traditional fitness equipment.
- In the same town the Extended Schools programme included a HandDance Pro with their dance mat packages to ensure their disabled/SEN pupils could join in the fun whilst Chadsgrove specialist SEN school and Sports College purchased both the HandDance Pro and Safety Surround inclusivity options .
