Engaging the disengaged at Fenland Junction Pupil Referral Unit
The use of dance mats in schools as a way to get children and young people who have become disengaged from traditional physical education activities has been increasing rapidly over the last two years. There is perhaps nowhere that presents more of a challenge than within a Pupil Referral Unit. The children and young people at Pupil Referral Units have generally become disengaged from many aspects of education, be it because of a medical condition, teenage pregnancy and motherhood or a behavioural issue. It is therefore vital to find some way to promote healthy lifestyles among these students and find something that will truly engage them in some form of physical activity.
At Fenland Junction PRU in March, Cambridgeshire the Cobalt Flux Just for Schools dance mat system from fitnessgaming ltd has been introduced to not only promote a positive attitude towards physical activity but also as a reward.
Diane Alderson, Head teacher says "The students at Fenland Junction have many challenges and we have a responsibility to promote a healthier and more active lifestyle among them. It has proved difficult to find a physical activity in which they all want to participate, can see their skill levels improve, and can be played as a team or individually. The Just for Schools system has been an instant hit because the pupils look at it as being a game and yet it gives them a good work out and helps raise their self esteem. It also allows us to reward good behaviour by allowing extra access to an activity that is also healthy."
